Unwanted Hair
Unwanted hair of the face, armpits, chest, back,
abdomen, pubic area, and legs are common cosmetic
complaints. Pseudo
Folliculitis Barbae (PFB) is a particular category of unwanted hair of the beard. It
commonly occurs with African Americans whose
curly hair curves and grows back into the skin
causing a foreign body inflammatory reaction and possible keloid scars. Unwanted
hair that has pigment (not gray hair or fine
blonde hairs) are best treated with laser
hair removal with the Diode
Laser. Hairs that are in the growth
(Telogen) phase respond to laser light. Multiple
treatments are necessary to remove the hair as
the hairs have to cycle into the telogen phase. Permanent hair reduction is defined
by the FDA as no hair growth over a period of
12 months.
