You see an incredible promotion offering a very low price for Botox, Juvederm, or other fillers. It sounds almost too good to be true and many times it may be. There have been reports of Physicians purchasing injectables or other fillers on the gray market in order to offer low prices. The gray market may refer to products originally manufactured by an approved company in the United States but exported abroad and then later ILLEGALLY imported back into the country. The gray market may also include counterfeit products as well. The illegality of the process may create serious patient safety issues as the products by-pass the regulations design to safe guard the American public.

Some of the dangers of by-passing authorized distribution channels are:

• the products are manufactured counterfeit products
• the products may have been manufactured properly but are now expired
• the products may have been manufactured properly but are mishandled or not stored properly
• the products may have been manufactured properly but are diluted or otherwise compromised

 
The first two items are very clear. Counterfeit products may not be effective and worse they may actually be dangerous. A counterfeit product may also contain toxic chemicals. There is very little incentive for a counterfeiter to care about the end user.

The product may be genuine but has expired and lost it potency leaving the patient disappointed with the results.

Some products need to avoid excessive sunlight such as Vitamin C or need to be refrigerated to maintain its potency such as Botox once it is reconstituted. Failure to safeguard the products during distribution process may decrease the potency and the actual results the patient expects

A product may be diluted so that the patient is receiving less product than expected even though the volume looks correct. Once again, patient results may be disappointing.

Truffles Medispa scrupulously orders products from authorized distributors and avoids the gray market. We do this to maintain our patient’s trust which we work hard to earn.

Photodynamic Therapy

with BLU-U is an excellent treatment for active acne. Simply sitting under the Blue Light for 1000 seconds twice a week for 4 weeks will kill the bacteria that causes Acne. BLU-U can be combined with Levulan to shrink the sebaceous glands that produce the excessive oil that causes acne.

Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

will tighten and tone your skin. Radiofrequency stimulates collagen formation with a series of treatments that may take up to 6 months to see maximal results.

Botox

is excellent to correct those frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines from excessive muscle contraction. Results from Botox are seen with in 3-14 days.

Juvederm XC

is a filler to correct Nasolabial folds or lines from the nose to the side of the mouth. The results from Juvederm are immediate and lasts for 6-12 months. Allow time in case there is any bruising from the injections.

what is the differences between a Medispa, Med spa or Medical Spa versus a plain ol’ spa?

Spa is actually an acronym for “Sanitus Par Aquam” or “Health through Water”. Historically people flocked to natural warm springs with their mineral healing waters for cures of their ailments. Warm Springs Georgia with Franklin Delano Roosevelt may come to mind. In America, Spas have morphed into an establishment for relaxation, pampering, and indulgence. A traditional spa may offer some forms of skin care such as facials and light fruit acid peels.

In the Twenty First Century, skin care has evolved to much more and the Medispa (Med spa or Medical Spa) was created. A Medispa is really a hybrid of the effectiveness of a doctor’s office and the pleasing atmosphere of a spa.

Truffles Medispa recommends that perspective patients/clients look for following to decide whether the spa is a reputable, safe, and effective place for your treatments.

First, The “Medi” means that the spa needs to be affiliated with a licensed doctor. Many of the topical medicines such as Retin A, Hydroquinones, and Latisse are by prescription only. Similiarly injectables such as Botox, Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse are sold only to a licensed doctor.

Not all affiliations are the equal. Make sure that the medical director is closely affiliated with the spa and is available for consultations, questions, or treatments.

Second, we believe that it is important for the medical doctor to practice in a specialty that deals with cosmetic issues. We especially believe that Plastic Surgeons are uniquely qualified to be the Medical Directors of Medispa. Plastic Surgeons are expert on the both surgical and non surgical treatments. Truffles Medispa was selected to host a small training session for advanced injection techniques for Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm XC. The session, on June 10, 2011 included Botox Cosmeticinjections for the DAO (Depressor Angularis Oris), the facial muscles that cause the corner of the lips to turn downward. A few units of Botox Cosmeticinjected into each DAO can improve this and place the lips corners into a more natural and youthful posiiton.

Juvederm XC, which is Juvedermwith local anesthetic to minimize pain, is commonly used for Nasolabial folds (the lines between the nose and the corners of the lips), and the lips themselves. A new technique is to inject Juvederm XC to improve the Tear Trough Deformity. A Tear Trough Deformity is the crease formed at the inside lower eyelid near the orbital rim. This crease forms as we age and the mid face descends elongating the lower eyelid. Juvederm XC injected into the proper plane will improve this crease.
